Leopoldo Zea, a major Latinamerican
thinker and outstanding Panamericanist has died

Considered a pillar of the History Commission of the PAIGH, Dr.
Leopoldo Zea Aguilar (1912-2004) died on 8 June, 2004, shortly before
celebrating his 92nd birthday. His life and work were replete with
rich experiences and he leaves behind multiple lessons and a transcendental
legacy for the Pan American Institute of Geography and History.

The PAIGH is to link itself
to the International Standards Organization (ISO)
|

In the Plenary Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malasia, the ISO/TC 211,
via Resolution 273, 28 May, 2004, formally established a link with
the PAIGH and conceded it Category "A" status, by which the PAIGH
will develop important regional activities related to the standardization
of geographic data.

The convenience of combining
the experiences of the four Commissions of the PAIGH in technical
projects will be evaluated

The Annual Meeting of the US National Section took place at the
Eros Data Center of the USGS, Sioux Falls, ND, on 17-18 May, 2004.
As part of the deliberations it considered the convenience and benefits
of the PAIGH undertaking projects that combined the experiences
and capabilities of the existing four Commissions. At the meeting,
the Secretary General presented to the meeting and informed its
members of the current state of the PAIGH and the challenges that
confront it as a Panamerican organization.

The PAIGH finds itself in
a moment of change in which the Institute is newly obliged to demonstrate
its relevance and innovative capacity, says Santiago Borrero, to

In the auditorium of the OAS in Washington (USA), on 7 April, 2004,
the Secretary General presented his Annual Report on the activities
of the PAIGH to the Permanent Council and General Commission of
the OAS. In his intervention Santiago Borrero declared that in the
face of the current situation the PAIGH sees itself as an entity
with a vital leading role in, and for, America, but that it is obliged
once again to demonstrate its relevance as part of the Interamerican
system.

The Revista Cartográfica
enters the electronic age

The PAIGH has published its first
publication in digital format. It is the Revista Cartogáfica,
No. 76-77, corresponding to the period January-December, 2003.
The abstracts of the articles may be read free of charge. Soon,
as an additional service to our subscribers, the Revista will
be able to be consulted fully on-line, as well as in its usual
hard-copy format, so Editor, Antonio Hernández Navarro, reports..

New stimulus to tactile cartography
|
|
|
On 17 May, 2004, in the offices of the Universidad Tecnológica
Metropolitana (UTEM), in Santiago, Chile, the Agreement between
PAIGH and this Chilean university was signed, by which the Center
for Tactile Cartography, directed by Alejandra Coll, will be developed.
This will benefit the sightless population of Latin America by way
of attention to their necessities for geographic information.

the 21st century the work of cartographers begins where the spatial
data infrastructures end, says the President of the ICA in the PAIGH

The Secretary General initiated
a round of conferences in 2004 on "RETHINKING AMERICA", with a presentation
entitled "INFORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT: TERITORIAL INFORMATION IN THE
21ST CENTURY", given by Milan Konecny, President of the International
Cartography Association (ICA). During his intervention Dr. Konecny
referred to the possibilities of strengthening the cooperative linkages
between the ICA and the PAIGH.

Venezuelan
government approves Regulation of the National Section
|
|
|
Via Resolution No.166, dated 11 March, 2004, signed by Dr. Ana
María Osorio, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, the
Venezuelan government approved the Regulation of the National Section
of the PAIGH, originally submitted for its consideration by Brig.
General Romer Mena Nava, President of the Military Geographic Institute
"Simón Bolívar".

World Summit of the UN on
the Information Society (WSIS): the role of science
|

As a means to guide the Summit, during 6-9 December, 2003, a conference
on the role of science in the Information Society was held. In the
opening session the Princess of Thailand, H. R. H. Maha Chakri Sirindhorn,
spoke, as well as the Secretary General of the PAIGH, Santiago Borrero.

Minister of the Ministry for Women of Paraguay
visits PAIGH
|

|
On the occasion of the 9th Regional
Conference on Women of Latin America and the Caribbean, celebrated
in Mexico City, María Argaña Mateu, Minister of Paraguay, accompanied
by Ambassador José Felix Fernández Estigarribia, visited PAIGH
and exchanged opinions on the current role of the American woman,
her contribution to the development of geography and history,
and the significance of Paraguay for the PAIGH.

Death of Carlos Forray
|

On 16 May, 2004, in Santiago, Chile,
Ing. Carlos Forray Rojas, who served as Secretary General of the PAIGH
from 1965 to 1973, died. Of Chilean nationality, Carlos Forray represented
the PAIGH during the presidencies of Ing. Alfredo Obiols (Guatemala,
1965-1969) and Dr. Arch C. Gerlach (USA 1969-1973). In the name of
the PAIGH the Secretary General sadly regrets the passing of Ing.
Forray. |
