First Pan American Meeting of Scientific Editors

The First Pan-American Meeting of Scientific Publishers "New paradigms in Scientific Edition" will be carried out the 6 and 7 of October, 2005, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Objective: It will treat 1) the fast transition towards virtual edition and challenges posed to scientific magazines; 2) the influence that this modality will have on these publications, written in Spanish and Portuguese, which are at present "sub-represented" in indexes and international databases of developed countries; and 3) the repercussion to authors in these magazines and consequences of its evaluation on the part of the agencies of science and technology (at the respective countries) that should value their production.

The event is organized by CAYCIT. Summaries will be online as of september 8, 2005. Later on, the conclusions wil also be available.

Benefits expected: 1) to integrate efforts of participating countries to improve editorial and academic quality of magazines, in order to achieve better positioning within main stream research publications; 2) to disseminate the use of standards and their application to new alternatives of editorial production, such as electronic publications, open files, and initiatives like SciELO; and 3) to analyze cost-benefit of paper and electronic publications, and the marketing that should be applied to obtain a greater distribution.
