LEOPOLDO ZEA, A MAJOR LATINAMERICAN THINKER AND OUTSTANDING PANAMERICANIST HAS DIED

Leopoldo Zea was a tireless collaborator of the PAIGH. Through his publications-more than 60 titles-this grand Panamerican played a major role in stimulating critical thought.

Linked to the work of the Institute from its early days his activities in offices were initiated when, in 1947, Dr. Silvio Zavala created the Committee on History of Ideas in America, and charged him with its presidency. He directed this Committee up to his death. The central activity of this Committee was to be the preparation and publication of the History of Ideas of each one of the American nation states.

From 1956 works that constituted a series related to contemporary ideas of America were published. Thus, by means of an agreement with the Fondo de Cultura Económica of Mexico, it became possible to widely diffuse the works of Arturo Ardao (Uruguay), Guillermo Francovich (Bolivia), Joao Cruz Costa (Brazil), José Luis Romero (Argentina), Rafael Heliodora Valle (Central America), Angélica Mendoza (USA), Victor Alba (Mexico), Antonio Gámez Robledo (America), Augusto Salazar Bondy (Peru) and Jaime Jaramillo Uribe (Colombia), among others.

Within the PAIGH the editorial work of maestro Zea was immense. Suffice it to mention but a few of the titles published since the 1970s:

  • Filosofía de la Historia Americana, Tierra Firme Collection of the Fondo de Cultura Económica-IPGH, Mexico, D.F. 1978.
  • Colección Latinoamérica Fin de Milenio, 16 volumes Tierra Firme-FCE-IPGH Collection, Mexico, D.F. 1999-2001.
  • Colección Conmemorando el Quinto Centenario del Descubrimiento de América y el Encuentro de Dos Mundos, 6 volumes. Tierra Firme-FCE-IPGH Collection, Mexico, D.F. 1991-1993.
  • Colección Latinoamérica en la Globalización y el Tercer Milenio. 2 volumes published of a total of 5 planned. 2002 - to date.

More recently the PAIGH participated in the publication of the book Visión de América: Homenaje a Leopoldo Zea (2003), as a tribute to his 60 years as university professor, and his 90th birthday.
