THE PRIZE

The prize will be awarded every four years within the frame of the Consultative Meeting of the Cartography Commission of the PAIGH, to the author or authors of an original work related to the disciplines covered by the Commission, recognized by the Jury as that of the highest value and importance for continental development in the areas considered by the Commission.

GENERAL BASES

Of the participants

1. Persons or institutions of any of the Member States of the PASIGH may participate

Of the works

2. The works must be presented by a National Section of a Member State of the PAIGH.

3. The works must be sent to the National Section where the corresponding Consultative Meeting will be held.

4. In the case of an atlas, maps, cartographic series or digital cartographic products, they must include documents that describe the methodology employed for their generation, these being the basis for the jury's evaluation.

5. Only original works will be accepted, re-editions may not be submitted for the prize. In any case, the date of publication must fall within the period between the prior General Assembly and the current one.

6. The works submitted for evaluation must be completed only by persons or institutions of member countries of the PAIGH, regardless of the topic, when and only that falls within the areas of the Cartography Commission.

Of the form of presentation and deadline for submission

7. The National Section of the PAIGH must present the work via a document sent to the President of the Cartography Commission, with copy to the General Secretariat of the PAIGH.

8. To award the prize, the jury will take into account that stipulated in Article 29 of the Financial Regulation in relation to the payment of quotas.

9. Three (3) published copies of the work must be sent to the National Section where the Consultative Meeting is to be held with at least a month's notice before that meeting.

10. The materials submitted will not be returned to authors; the General Secretariat will dispose of them.

Of the prize

11. The prize to be awarded, following the resolution of the jury, shall consist of: a Diploma and a Medal, that will be presented by the President of the PAIGH to the author(s) of the work or a representative of the winning institution, during the Closing Session of the Consultative Meeting. In the case that the winner is absent from the meeting the said prize will be presented to the Head of the Delegation of the country to which he/she belongs.

12. If the characteristics of the work permit it, the winning work will be published in the Revista Cartográfica, with the prior approval of the Editor.

13. On the basis of the quality of the works or the absence of the same, the jury may declare the competition null and void.

Of the jury

14. The jury will consist of the President of the Cartography Commission of the PAIGH, the national Cartography member of the National Section where the Assembly General is to be held, and three delegates accredited to Member States present.

15. The jury will be presided over by the President of the Cartography Commission who, in the case of a tie, shall have the deciding vote.

16. In the case of a work being submitted for the prize by a country that has a representative on the jury, the Consultative Meeting shall elect a new delegate, to substitute. In the case of the President of the Cartography Commission being thus impeded to act, the order of precedence established by the Consultative Meeting will be taken into account.

17. The three delegates accredited by Member States shall preferably be from countries different from the authors of works and shall be elected during the first plenary session of the Consultative Meeting.

18. The decision of the jury is final and may not be appealed.

19. For those works that do no win the prize, and that have not been published, they will be evaluated to consider them for inclusion in an issue of the Revista Cartográfica.

20. The elements to be considered in the evaluations for the prize will be:

  • Currency and clarity of the concepts employed
  • Independence from specific makes of equipment and commercial software for their use
  • Methodological and technological development
  • Real possibilities for use and implementation in Member States
  • Originality of the work
  • Scientific or technical rigor, and theoretic bases
