The 100th Meeting of Authorities and the 5th Joint Technical Meeting of the Commissions were inaugurated within the framework of the 24th General Assembly of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH). During the formal event, the hosts extended a warm welcome to the PAIGH authorities, colleagues, scientists, and executives from the Americas.

The ceremony was presided over, on behalf of the Government of the Dominican Republic, by the Deputy Minister of Economic and Social Analysis, Dr. Alexis Cruz; the Thematic Ambassador of the Deputy Minister of Multilateral Foreign Policy Affairs, Ambassador Néstor Cerón; and Mr. Bolívar Troncoso Morales, President of the National Section of the PAIGH in the Dominican Republic and Director of the José Joaquín Hungría Morell National Geographic Institute. MA Antonio Campuzano Rosales, Secretary General of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH), visited the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, as part of the Tenth Session of the United Nations Regional Committee on Global Geospatial Information Management for the Americas (UN-GGIM: Americas).

During the event, the Secretary General of the PAIGH had the opportunity to present the mission of this institution, highlighting the importance and structure of the Technical Assistance Programmes, as well as the activities of the Social Communication Department, which is focused on the editing and dissemination of scientific information through periodical and occasional publications, social networks and the official PAIGH website.

MA. Campuzano also offered the UN-GGIM: Americas Academic Network the opportunity to collaborate in PAIH programmes, inviting participants to encourage their respective institutions to join the Technical Assistance Programme with projects that benefit the Americas. He also made PAIGH’s media outlets available to attendees for publishing their research results, reaffirming this international organisation’s commitment to academic exchange between the UN-GGIM: Americas Academic Network and the PAIGH’s Pan-American community.

  • Collaboration with the UN: The PAIGH is working with the Latin America Division of the United Nations (UN) to create a Committee on Geographical Names, which will be established within the PAIGH infrastructure.
  • Support to the OAS in the Belize-Guatemala Adjacency Area: Collaboration continues with the Organization of American States (OAS) to provide scientific support on issues of adjacency between Belize and Guatemala. In this regard, Mr. Campuzano thanked the Eastern Republic of Uruguay for its efforts in this area.
  • Partnership with ILCE: The signing of a strategic partnership between the PAIGH and the Latin American Institute for Educational Communication (ILCE) was highlighted, opening up new opportunities in the field of education and communication for the Americas. This collaboration will allow countries in the region to access ILCE services at reduced costs.
  • Support for CEPEIGE: Mr. Campuzano highlighted the importance of the Pan American Center for Geographic Studies and Research (CEPEIGE) and announced that the PAIGH intends to increase the financial resources allocated to this organization by 100%.
  • Joint work with SIRGAS: Continued support for the Geodetic Reference System for the Americas (SIRGAS) was reaffirmed, underscoring the relevance of its initiatives in the regional sphere.
  • Increase in resources for UN-GGIM: Americas: Maestro Campuzano reaffirmed the commitment to collaborate with the Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM: Americas) and announced the intention to increase the resources allocated by the PAIGH to this committee by 50% in order to strengthen and continue joint projects.

The tenth session of the Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM: Americas) addressed the topic “Tools for the dissemination of regional geospatial information” at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile. In this context, progress was made on the project to launch the IDE Americas website, which has been in preparation for more than two years.

The session was attended by Rolando Ocampo, Director of the Statistics Division of ECLAC; Sofía Nilo Crisóstomo, President of UN-GGIM: Americas; Álvaro Monett and Horacio Caballero, representatives of the Statistics Division of ECLAC; and Antonio Campuzano Rosales, Secretary General of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH).

In his remarks, Mr. Campuzano highlighted that the IDE Americas website—formerly known as GEOSUR—builds on 16 years of collaboration within the PAIGH’s Pan-American community. He also recognized the work of ECLAC, UN-GGIM: Americas, SIRGAS, AMERIGEO, the Development Bank of Latin America, and the PAIGH in consolidating the Integrated Map of the Americas. He stressed the importance of keeping this platform up to date and congratulated those involved for the progress achieved.

The programme included the celebration of the tenth anniversary of UN-GGIM: Americas, with speeches by Sofía Nilo Crisóstomo, President of UN-GGIM: Americas; Antonio Campuzano Rosales, Secretary General of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH); and Antonius Bambang Winajarto, President of UN-GGIM: Asia-Pacific, who highlighted the importance of this event and the achievements of the last decade.

On behalf of the Pan-American community of the PAIGH, Mr. Campuzano presented Sofía Nilo Crisóstomo and Rolando Ocampo with a commemorative plaque in recognition of ten years of contributions by UN-GGIM: Americas to the continent. He also reaffirmed the PAIGH’s commitment to continue actively collaborating with regional international organisations, in line with the PAIGH’s Strategic Modernisation Plan 2022-2025.



On the occasion of the bicentennial celebration of the Heroic Military College of Mexico, retired Major Historian Antonio Campuzano Rosales, Secretary General of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH), was invited by the Ministry of National Defence to accompany Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Constitutional President of the United Mexican States, on a historical tour.

In his capacity as a military historian, Mr. Campuzano Rosales explained to the President the historical importance of the Fortress of San Carlos in Perote, Veracruz, as the first headquarters of this military institution. This visit is part of the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Heroic Military College.


The Secretary General of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) held a virtual meeting with Dr. Mario Calixto Ruiz, President of the PAIGH Geophysics Commission, with the aim of coordinating the logistical and structural activities of the Institute’s meetings.

During the meeting, preparations for the 100th Meeting of Authorities (30 October) and the 24th General Assembly (1-3 November) were discussed. In addition, Dr Kelly Guerrier, Dr Juan Gabriel Barros, Dr Marino Protti Quesada and Dr Eugenio Polanco were invited to collaborate in the development of the Geophysics Commission, particularly in the organisation of the 5th Technical Meeting of the Commissions, which took place in the Dominican Republic on 30 and 31 October.


As part of the collaboration between the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) and Esri, MA. Antonio Campuzano Rosales, Secretary General of PAIGH, and Dr. Hermann Manríquez, President of the PAIGH Geography Commission, met with Eng. Eric van Praag, Senior Project Manager at Esri, to define the objectives of future joint activities.

At this meeting, they highlighted the importance of strengthening human resources, especially among young students, by offering them training in the use of Esri tools, such as ArcGIS and other platforms, in order to encourage the creation of prototype projects and the demonstration of good practices in geography and related sciences.


MA. Antonio Campuzano Rosales, Secretary General of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH), held a working meeting in Mexico City with Mr Efraín Guadarrama Pérez, Vice-President of the PAIGH National Section in Mexico and Director General of American Regional Organisations and Mechanisms of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).

The main objective of this meeting was to strengthen inter-institutional cooperation ties between the PAIGH and the SRE, as well as to review the details of the 24th General Assembly of the PAIGH, which will be held in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This event will be attended by PAIGH authorities.
